Health Department
Your County Health Department
County Health Departments have served our local communities in George for more than 100 years.

The mission of the Southeast Health District and your local Health Department is to protect and promote the health of people in Southeast Georgia, wherever they live, work and play, uniting with individuals, families and diverse communities to improve and enhance their quality of life.  Your health is important to us.  Our staff is well trained to provide services to this community.  You can depend on us to protect Georgia's health.

Each Health Department provides various programs and clinic services.  The following are some of the services provided by your local Health Department:

Child and Adolescent Health
Babies Can't Wait (BCW)
An early intervention program for infants and toddlers with developmental delays.
Breastfeeding
Assists families with successful breastfeeding experiences, including education, promotion, referral and breast pump loans.
Children 1st
Health assessments for children aimed at improving the health and developmental outcomes of children birth to 5 years.
Children's Medical Services (CMS)
Offers long-term specialty treatment and therapy for children with orthopedic, seizure, hearing, cardiac, chronic lung, genetic, vision and sickle cell disorders.
Health Checks
Early, Periodic, Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment for children birth to 21 years old.
Immunizations (shots)
HIB; Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Polio; Influenza (flu); Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTaP); Rotavirus; Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR); Varicella (chickenpox); Human Papillomavirus (HPV); Meningococcal; and Pneumococcal vaccines are available at all sites.  Immunizations for international travelers are available at Ware County Health Department in Waycross.
Intestinal Parasites, Scabies, Lice
Exam and treatment.
Lead screening
Identifies children with lead poisoning.
School screenings
Vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis.
Teledentistry Clinic
Provide screening, preventive services, and oral health education for students who may not have access to dental care
Sickle Cell
Testing and counseling for Sickle Cell Disease.
Teen services
Youth services are provided in all of the county health departments.
Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
Supplemental food, physical assessment and nutritional counseling for pregnant/postpartum women, infants, and children to age 5 years.

Women's Health
Cancer Screenings
Breast, cervical (BreasTEST and More Program) and colon (hemocults).  Provides assistance with mammograms and follow-up of abnormal results.
Family Planning
Education, examination, pregnancy testing, counseling, treatment and birth control methods.
Perinatal Health Partner (PHP) and Best Babies (BB)
Nursing case management of high-risk pregnant women and their newborns.

Adult Health
Health Promotion
Promotes policy and environmental changes to support health lifestyles within communities, schools and worksites.
Immunizations (shots)
Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis; Influenza (flu); Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Meningococcal; Human Papillomavirus (HPV); and Pneumococcal vaccines are available at all Health Department sites.  International travel vaccines are available at Ware County Health Department in Waycross.
Epidemiological Investigation
Meningitis, food-borne and other illnesses.
HIV/AIDS
Testing, counseling and education, outpatient services and social services.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Testing, follow-up and treatment
Tuberculosis (TB)
Diagnosis, treatment and prevention, including case finding and contact follow-up.

Wellness Centers
Wellness Centers provide primary care and support services to patients and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Environmental Health
Complaint Investigations
Investigates and responds to complaints of potential health hazards.
Disease Control
Food-borne, vector-borne, and water-borne illnesses; and rabies.
Injury Prevention
Educational modules, literature and consultations.
Pollution Control
Inspection of water (includes well water program), land and septic tank systems.
Sanitation Control
Inspection of motels, restaurants, institutions, tattoo and body piercing studios and public swimming pools.

Other Services
Community Health Data
Vital statistics, disease surveillance, reporting and investigating.
Emergency Preparedness
Prepares Public Health and community to respond to disasters, including receipt and distribution of medicine and medical supplies during a large-scale disaster.
Health Education
Outreach, health information and promotion.
Information and Referral
Links clients to other services and/or providers.
Telemedicine/telehealth
Links specialty physicians to wellness clinics and health departments and provides access to training.
